Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system as well as to normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D also contributes to normal blood calcium levels and to the maintenance of normal bones. Furthermore, Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and has a role in the process of cell division
Several scientists have published a very concerning article regarding vitamin D levels among the European population in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:
“Vitamin D deficiency is evident throughout the European population at prevalence rates that are concerning and that require action from a public health perspective. What direction these strategies take will depend on European policy but should aim to ensure vitamin D intakes that are protective against vitamin D deficiency in the majority of the European population.”
Not enough vitamin D3 via food
It is difficult to obtain adequate levels of vitamin D through diet. For example, you have to eat over a kilo of smoked salmon or over four and a half kilos of eggs without shells to get 4000 IU (100 μg) of vitamin D.
UV-index
During exposure to sunlight, a molecule called 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin absorbs UVB radiation. This gets converted to previtamin D3 which in turn gets converted to active vitamin D3. However this requires the UV-index to be 4 or greater. If the UC-index is 3 or less the UVB-rays are too weak to produce vitamin D.
Magnesium needed
Adequate levels of magnesium in the body are essential for the absorption and metabolism of vitamin D. If you are deficient in magnesium it will be difficult to reach adequate vitamin D levels-
Always take high quality supplements
In 2013 a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association examined vitamin D food supplements. The study showed that two-thirds of all supplements had a significant discrepancy between their label and their actual content. Vitamin D3 made by Innate Response and MegaFood deliver what they promise. They inspect all of their supplements in laboratories to make sure there is no discrepancy between the stated dosage on the label and the actual content.
