Side effects of magnesium

The most common side effects of magnesium are diarrhea or loose stools and interactions with medications. Overdosing may also lead to muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, and breathing difficulties. Ensure proper dosage and choose the right type of magnesium supplement based on your needs.

Stomach Issues and Diarrhea

Magnesium can affect the gastrointestinal tract, and certain forms of magnesium are more likely to cause issues. Common symptoms include loose stools. Magnesium oxide is more prone to having a laxative effect, whereas other forms, such as magnesium glycinate, typically do not have these effects. We do not use magnesium oxide in our magnesium products due to its low bioavailability and its tendency to cause severe loose stools.

Interactions with Medications

Magnesium can interact with certain medications, affecting their efficacy. Magnesium should not be taken at the same time as, for example, antibiotics. The same applies to calcium channel blockers, which should not be taken concurrently with magnesium supplements. Wait at least 2–3 hours between doses.

Symptoms of Overdosing

In the case of a magnesium overdose, the following symptoms may appear: muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, and breathing difficulties.

How to Avoid Magnesium Side Effects

Read our advice on how to minimize the risk of side effects when taking magnesium supplements.

The Right Type of Magnesium Supplement

There are different forms of magnesium, and some are less likely to cause side effects. Magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, magnesium taurate, and magnesium bisglycinate generally do not cause side effects such as loose stools when taken at the recommended daily dose. Magnesium oxide almost always causes side effects and is not a form we recommend. It is best to choose forms that are more bioavailable and have fewer gastrointestinal effects. It’s important to always purchase high-quality supplements. This applies not only to magnesium but to all types of supplements.

Dosage and Timing

To minimize the risk of side effects, it is important to follow dosage guidelines. Start with a low dose and gradually increase if needed. It’s also a good idea to take magnesium supplements with food to reduce the risk of stomach discomfort. Avoid taking large doses at once; instead, spread the intake throughout the day. Do not take magnesium at the same time as medications with which it interacts.

At-Risk Groups

Certain groups, such as the elderly, children, and pregnant individuals, should be extra careful to always follow the recommended dosage. Older adults may have reduced kidney function and should therefore be especially mindful of their dosage.
