CoQ10 supplementation for patients with fibromyalgia

Randomized Double-Blind Placebo Study Supports CoQ10

Researchers have studied CoQ10 and fibromyalgia. In a randomized double-blind placebo study, patients with fibromyalgia received 300 mg of CoQ10 per day for 40 days. The fibromyalgia group that received CoQ10 supplements showed a reduction in the FIQ (Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire) with significantly less pain, reduced fatigue (both reduced morning fatigue and general fatigue) compared to those who did not take CoQ10 supplements. Additionally, those who took the supplement experienced significantly reduced pain at so-called tender points* and recovered from inflammation.

Furthermore, researchers observed that the fibromyalgia group receiving CoQ10 supplements developed new mitochondria in their cells. The researchers state, “These results lead to the hypothesis that CoQ10 has potential therapeutic effects in fibromyalgia and indicate new potential molecular targets for the treatment of this disease.”

Fibromyalgia affects approximately 5 percent of the population. Mitochondrial dysfunction and a deficiency of CoQ10 have been observed in cases of fibromyalgia.

* In the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, palpation is performed on 18 standardized tender points.
