CoQ10 – Age Slowly

Coenzyme Q10, CoQ10, Q10, Ubiquinone, Ubidecarenone. A cherished name goes by many. Is Coenzyme Q10 the future's super supplement? Several recent studies suggest that CoQ10 is, at the very least, an important component of a healthy life and can help prevent certain age-related diseases.

CoQ10 and Energy Production

Coenzyme Q10 is essential for energy production in all of the body's cells. When the energy of the cells decreases, they die faster, and the aging process accelerates. CoQ10 also acts as an antioxidant and combats free radicals. A number of recent studies highlight the importance of CoQ10 in extending life and enhancing the cell’s ability to produce energy. As CoQ10 levels decline, the production of harmful free radicals increases, which can cause the cell to die more quickly. Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York have shown that the degree of CoQ10 deficiency in cells directly correlates with an overproduction of free radicals and cell death. (Quinzii, C. M., López, et al. 2010).

CoQ10 & Health

Individuals living in polluted areas tend to have lower levels of CoQ10 and vitamin E, as these are used by the body to counteract environmental toxins. According to Tekle et al., the low levels of CoQ10 and vitamin E explain why areas with higher levels of environmental toxins show increased ill health and mortality. (Tekle, M., Gromadzinska, J et al. 2010)

Additionally, CoQ10 supplements protect the eyes and prevent lens damage that would otherwise lead to cataracts, according to research by Kernt, M., Hirneiss, C. et al. from 2010.

According to Maes, M., Mihaylova, I. et al., CoQ10 levels are lower in patients suffering from depression, and significantly lower in patients with severe depression and in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome. (Maes, M., Mihaylova, I. et al. 2009).

Whether or not CoQ10 is the future's super supplement, research clearly shows that CoQ10 is an important supplement for a healthy life.
